The Nomad Design Story
After more than fifteen years of watching and studying lures while operating Nomad Sportfishing Adventures charter operation, Damon Olsen, and the Nomad Design Team have crafted a range of unique and innovative lures and tackle encompassing both casting, jigging and trolling designs. Each product combines innovative designs with incredible toughness and value, and are all made with the specific purpose of doing the job better than anything else available.
The Idea behind Nomad Design started in 2008. Nomad Sportfishing had been importing a variety of lures and tackle from all over the world for the purpose of operating Nomad Sportfishing Adventures charter operation in the remote NE Coast of Australia. Nomad Sportfishing Adventures charter operation started in 2002, with a purpose to fish some of the most remote and untouched ocean areas, and target some of the biggest and most brutal predators in the ocean. The limited range of tackle that could successfully be used when fishing for huge bluewater predators such as Giant Travally(GT), thousand pound black marlin and huge dogtooth tuna meant that we were constantly looking for the toughest and most effective tackle available. There were many gaps in the market, and many products simply not available, or not up to the job.
Not willing to settle for products not up to the task, and with an interest bordering on obsession for lures and tackle, Damon put his engineering background to good use and started researching and developing a range of lures and tackle that would be perfect for the demanding predators of the Coral Sea. The process of finding the correct materials and technology with which to manufacture tackle for such a demanding task was not an easy one, but eventually a partnership was formed, and a manufacturing facility found who understood the need for quality, strength and uncompromising finish. It was here that the serious design work started, with the first 4 lure models - the Madscad, Riptide, Chug Norris and the Maverick, all going through a 3 year design and testing process. This process led to the development of our Matrix Metal plate and Gorilla Through wire designs, which give ultimate strength to the lures. The use of the strongest HD ABS plastic for the bodies, and the foam filling process was also implemented. The DTX Minnow, with it's Patent Pending Autotune Bib System, was another unique and innovative design many years in the works, with the final product proving that a bluewater trolling minnow that always swims straight, deep and true could be made cost effectively.

Nomad Design Tackle launched officially in early 2016 in Australia, but in this time has grown dramatically to have over 100 retail stockists in Australia, and to already have distributors or retailers in 9 additional countries. Nomad Design will be bringing their unique and innovative designs to an international audience over coming years with cutting edge designs and technology that will make your fishing experience more fun and more productive.
The design process continues to this day, using the Nomad Sportfishing Adventures charter operation as a perfect proving ground for all new bluewater designs, the range of Nomad Design bluewater tackle is set to continue to expand into the future.
However, the story does not end here.
Damon and the team at Nomad Designs are all obsessed lure fishermen. Damon has lure fished for every species imaginable since an early age, in many countries, and to this day spends considerable time fishing for anything and everything that will eat a lure, whether it be bream in an estuary, or a GT surface strike in the Coral Sea. The way we see it, Nomad Designs have started by making lures for the biggest and toughest fish on the planet, with our years in the Coral Sea being the lure equivalent of formula 1 for engines. We plan to bring the experience and technology gained in the toughest arena through into smaller lures designed for every species that eats lures in Australia.
